Portland Place provides non-profit supportive housing for hard to house tenants. 46 permanent housing units are available providing homes to 55 individuals. Volunteers are needed to provide food donations and support on an as needed basis.
Visitors often comment on the sense of community that they feel when in the building. They notice the way that the tenants and staff relate to each other. As the years have come and gone by, we have accumulated shared memories and experience. We have cared for each other. As we have learned to trust and share, friendships have blossomed, This is a cheerful place Humour is a feature of our days, lightening the moments and diffusing the tough times
Tenants deal with a broad range of challenges, including physical disabilities , addiction, mental health and emotional issues. Most prior to their arrival at Portland Place, had difficulty in retaining adequate or appropriate housing. Portland Place is permanent housing, offering a promise of security some have rarelyexperienced. It is also more than just housing. Tenants, knowing that this is their home involve themselves at various levels. Three valuable members of the Board are tenants. Seven tenants are paid to help with the upkeep of the building. The tenants suggest new programs and help run the existing program events. There are numerous community events. the tenants care for each other learning how to tolerate and cope with someone having a difficult time. From just hanging out in the lobby to peeling another ten pounds of potatoes, to crafting another compliment of decorations, they make this place home.
