Ceilidh Club

CEILIDH (pronounced KAY_Lee), by translation means "a gathering" in Gaelic, and this is what its members do....gather. They gather to enjoy a variety of social activities ...theatre, a tour of some special location, or to engage in a favorite Presbyterian pastime...eating.

The group was conceived in 1965 after a number of couples in the then "Iona Club" tied the knot and decided, with the urging of Dr. Williams, Minister at the time, that there was a need for a newly married couples group. Iona had been a post high school organization for young adults.

A Christmas potluck dinner arranged by Judy & David Kerr and Ruth and Bill McDonald, was the kick-off event on the opening calendar. The 1966 program was put together by John and Bonny Craw and Jim & Marion Saunders. That was the birth of the "Couples Club".

In recent years a number of single people expressed interest in our activities , so it was decided they should welcomed to the group. Thus came the name change to a more appropriate "Ceilidh Club" Aside from the strictly social side of things, we fund raise, plant flower gardens at Glenview in the spring, assist in the plant sale in May of each year, and deliver flowers to shut-ins two months of the year.   The objectives of the Ceilidh Club are to:

  • encourage Christian fellowship in the Church
  • encourage participation in different aspects of Church life
  • assist with special projects undertaken by the congregation or individual groups

Each January we hold our annual general meeting to elect a new president and treasurer, then plan the year's activities, and determine who will host them.

If you are interested in our varied calendar of events and would like to join us. please contact Ruth and Bill McDonald, or Bob and Anne Gannon (co-presidents), the Church office or any of the members.
